The club performs regularly and participates in regional and national competitions.

CEDAR RAPIDS — Each Thursday night the water at Ellis Park is transformed into one giant stage, and the show is unlike any other.

Spectators fill the metal bleachers and line the shore to see an elaborate display of graceful acts, impressive stunts and colorful costumes.

The Five Seasons Ski Team has produced these shows for 31 years, and continue to entertain the crowds.

This week the club has an expanded schedule with shows Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. All shows begin at 7 p.m.

“It’s not just an exhibition. We try to put on a real show,” club member Mark Bortz said. “It’s a good quality show.”

Shows are filled with a whirlwind of action with skiers scurrying to prepare for their next routine. Emcees announce the acts and address the crowd between each.

Water skiers perform skills and tricks, including different pyramid formations, ballet lines, barefoot skiing and various jumps.

“It’s very exciting,” Bortz said. “Some of the acts are very intense. They take a lot of concentration, skill and practice.

“It’s really neat when it all comes together and the skiing is good and the audience is on their feet cheering … it’s really cool.”

The club performs from June through September, but members are committed year-round. Practices on water begin in May and can extend to October depending on temperatures. During the winter months, the club has indoor practices.

Club members fine tune their skills for competition as well. The group, consisting of members from various towns, including Cascade, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Mount Vernon and Palo, competes in local, regional and national meets.

“We try to be a competitive team as well as providing local entertainment,” Bortz said of the club that made the national tournament at least eight of the last 10 years.

The team has performed at Ellis this summer, unlike the early part of last season. The flooding of the Cedar River forced the ski team to practice formations on land and travel to Coralville Lake and Waterloo to perform on water. The team returned for two shows in August.

It was a much anticipated homecoming, and one still appreciated now.

“It was very nice to be back on the river,” Bortz said. “It’s nice to be back home and be able to do the shows for our home crowd.”

Performers take their position for the opening act of the Five Seasons Ski Team’s weekly show last Thursday at Ellis Park. Many acts begin from the stage near the shore.

The club has more than 50 skiers and almost 20 others who fill various other roles.

It’s an all inclusive club, accepting of all ages and skill levels. The roster consists of adults of all ages and children as young as 8 years old. Bortz is joined by daughters Amber, 11, and Taryn, 8, and wife, Mary, on the club.

Inexperienced skiers are welcome, and Bortz said they’ve tutored skiers who didn’t even know how to swim.

“Probably 90 percent of the people who join the team have never skied before,” Bortz said. “One of the things we like to do is teach. We like teach people how to do the things that we do.

“That’s half the fun is teaching people how to do stuff.”

Jessica Bonnema joined the club five years ago because a friend was involved. She’s been an active member ever since.

“She went from doing little things to centering the final pyramid,” said Deb Bonnema, Jessica’s mom, who was in attendance for last Thursday’s show at Ellis. “She fell in love with it and is going strong.”

The reason why Bortz, Bonnema and the rest of the team have an opportunity is due to the supporters who attend the Ellis Park show. Bortz said

“If it wasn’t for the fans we wouldn’t exist,” said Bortz, noting the fans help support the club with donations and help attract sponsors. “We want to make sure they’re having a good time and want to come back and see us again.”

Jack Baker isn’t perfect, but he has achieved perfection. Nine times to be exact.

Baker has scored nine holes-in-one during the more than 40 years he’s been golfing. He has a reasonable approach to the astounding feat.

“The holes-in-one are strictly luck,” Baker said. “Pars are a whole lot harder to do than a hole-in-one.”

His latest ace came at Twin Pines. Baker aced the 168-yard par-3 No. 12 hole, using a 5-iron. It was his second hole-in-one at Twin Pines and the seventh confirmed in his career. The 65-year-old from Cedar Rapids has two unconfirmed, meaning there were no witnesses.

“I’ve had a couple pretty cool ones over the years,” said Baker, a “semi-retired” psychologist, who works with golfers on issues including Attention Deficit Disorder, anger management, visualization and nutrition.

Among those was his first hole-in-one at Twin Pines in 2001 when he double-eagled its par-4 No. 10 hole. He even followed it with a eagle on the next hole in one of his more memorable rounds.

“Yeah, that was a shocker,” Baker said about the double-eagle. “I had a pretty sterling round. I think I shot 67 that day.”

The other came on the No. 3 hole at TPC at Deere Run in Silvis, Ill. It was the first hole-in-one at the course opened in 2000. A plaque with Baker’s name is on display, honoring the feat.

Baker said he began golfing in his 20′s and now golfs about four times a week. He was quick to answer that he has a five handicap, but said that doesn’t mean anything. Baker is a regular at the city courses and named Saddleback Golf Course in Solon and Pleasant Valley Golf Course in Iowa City as a couple of his other favorite courses.

Twin Pines PGA Head Professional Gary Louvar is familiar with Baker, noting he works a lot on swing fundamentals.

“It can be ever so often he just puts that perfect swing together and that’s what happens,” Louvar said about the numerous aces. “Perfect swing, perfect club selection. Whatever it takes to make it go.”

It’s worked at different courses and different states, beginning with his first official one at Quail Creek Golf Course in North Liberty in 1987. He’s carded aces at courses in Colorado and Illinois. The feats don’t get old but there is a constant reaction.

“They’re kind of funny because you don’t get to see them go in,” Baker said. “As a psychologist thinks about it, I was stunned. You kind of go, ‘Holy crap.’ “

Baker has the golf ball from each ace that he said has been made with low-to-medium irons. That includes the two unofficial aces he’s had at Jones and Gardner (then Squaw Creek) Golf Courses. Baker said that anyone can get an ace, but if no one sees it then it doesn’t mean anything.

“I looked around and prayed for someone to be around and not a soul,” Baker said. “It’s terrible … If someone doesn’t see it, as far as I’m concerned, it’s a two.”

Louvar said he couldn’t believe it when Baker informed him his latest was officially No. 7. Louvar only has one in his career and knows golfers of 40 and 50 years who have never done it.

“I would say it’s very rare. You have a lot of your tour players that don’t even have that,” Louvar said. “I know there’s a lot of people that play their entire career and never have one.”

CEDAR RAPIDS — The Cedar Rapids Softball Hall of Fame is returning to Ellis Park.

At least for the time being.

The CRSHOF will again hold its annual Hall of Fame Day with an induction ceremony and 16-inch slow pitch games throughout Sunday at the Ellis Park softball fields.

Games begin at 8:30 a.m. and will continue until noon, when the 2008 and 2009 classes will be inducted into the hall of fame. More games are scheduled in the after noon, beginning at 12:45 p.m. and concluding about 4 p.m. The event is set for Diamond 2.

“We would love to see a lot of fans,” CRSHOF member Gregg Bosch said. “With the wonderful tradition we have softball in Cedar Rapids … we’re looking for big things in the future.”

Last year’s Hall of Fame Day and ceremonies were canceled and the CRSHOF building ruined by the flooding of the Cedar River which, completely covered the Ellis softball field area.

The floods biggest blow was delivered to the CRSHOF building located just outside of the main diamond off Ellis Road. The entire structure was overtaken by floodwaters. Almost all of the memorabilia and trophies were damaged, but members have tried to salvage anything possible.

“We lost everything,” Bosch said. “The flood was up to the top of the ceiling in that building.

“Basically, we’re starting over from scratch.”

The group learned that the city actually owned the CRSHOF building, causing them to wait on word from different agencies before finalizing plans.

“We’re hoping to rebuild somewhere near Ellis Park, although that hasn’t been finalized yet,” Bosch said. “We will be building again at a site yet to be determined.”

Two classes will go into the CRSHOF. Seven members of the 2008 class will finally get their recognition and one automatic selection for the 2009 will be honored Sunday.

Former Modern Piping players Jack Minder and Jay Coleman were automatic selections of the 2008 class. Minder, an Iowa Softball Hall of Fame in 2007, was considered on of the best fielders in Cedar Rapids and was named a second-team all-American in 1987 helping Modern Piping to a third place at the ASA national tournament.

Coleman, who Bosch called the state’s best outfielder, was a 2002 inductee to the state hall of fame and has been inducted in to the Des Moines Hall of Fame.

Rick Daniels, Tom Dvorak, Jerry Flanagan, Dave Smutz and George Steinke round out the 2008 class.

Randy Dvorak is the lone member of the 2009 class, because the CRSHOF doesn’t currently have a selection committee in place, according to Bosch. Dvorak, who played almost 40 years, including 23 ASA and 11 USSSA national tournaments, was a member of two state title teams.

Along with the individuals, Armstrong’s 14-inch squad of the 1980s also will be honored. More than 30 players competed for those squads and nearly 25 are expected to be in attendance Sunday.

University of Northern Iowa wrestler John Simon was still processing the tragic events in Parkersburg Wednesday morning. The former Aplington-Parkersburg football player was still in a state of disbelief, like many in the community, about the shooting death of long-time football coach Ed Thomas.

Police have 24-year-old Mark Becker, a former Falcons football player, in custody.

Simon was working for the town near its pool when he received calls about the incident at the high school weight room. He quickly drove to the school to assess the situation.

“I’m still trying to get used to the fact that coach is gone and that he was shot,” said Simon, noting he had hope that Thomas would survive the shooting. “You got the worst news that he passed.

“I still can’t believe it. It probably won’t hit me until after the funeral.”

Simon, a sophomore who wrestled 165 pounds for the Panthers last season, is a 2008 graduate of Aplington-Parkersburg, where he was a three-time state placewinner. He was a three-year letterwinner in football, playing fullback and linebacker for Thomas. His younger brother, Jordan, a 2009 Class 1A state runner-up at 215, is a senior for the Falcons’ football team and was working with John at the time of the shooting.

He would stop by the weight room regularly just to say hi to Thomas, even if he meant he had to receive some good-natured from Thomas for being smaller than his younger brother.

“I love coach,” Simon said. “He was like a second father. He always make sure my grades were up, even after high school. He’d always ask me how UNI was going, how’s wrestling going, are my grades keeping up.”

Football coach was just part of the role he played to members of the Falcons’ football team. He served as a strong all-around role model.

“I think he was a better guy than a football coach, and he was a great football coach” Simon said.

“Coach said all the time, ‘If all I’ve ever taught you is how to play the game of football then (I’ve) failed,’ ” said Simon, noting Thomas was a great motivator. “He always said (his) goal is to teach you to be a better man, a better husband, a better friend, a better father, and if I’ve taught you to do that then I’ve succeeded,”

Simon said he’s seen a state of shock consume the community.

“Everyone’s in a somber mood,” Simon said. “They know what happened but they don’t want to believe that it happened.”
