Wrestling community rallies behind Beatty

It’s an example of family helping family. At least that’s how it might seem listening to University of Iowa wrestler Chad Beatty.

Beatty described the Hawkeye team and others in the wrestling community as a “close family,” so it’s fitting that family is helping his family. The wrestling community has rallied behind the Beattys, helping raise money for medical treatment to Beatty’s father, Paul.

“It’s a community,” said Beatty, a two-time state champion for Wilton. “Everyone wants to help each other. It’s a tight bunch of people.” Continue reading

Ironside still influencing Eastern Iowa wrestlers

Mark Ironside (right) demonstrates how to convincingly fake a grab for the leg with former Coe wrestler and camp assistant Jared Creason as part of a session of his Ironman Wrestling Camp at Cedar Rapids Jefferson in 2004.

Mark Ironside is a beloved wrestling figure in Eastern Iowa. It could be the two prep state titles he won for Cedar Rapids Jefferson, his four-time All-American and two-time national champ career for the University of Iowa or the energetic, passionate and sometimes brutally honest radio analysis for Hawkeye wrestling. Reaction to Sanderson coping with ISU backlash

Maybe I’ve been inside for way too long or I’m tired of watching daytime TV but I was somewhat bothered by former Iowa State and new Penn State coach Cael Sanderson’s reaction in a story by Eric Petersen of The Gazette. Read EP’s article at http://www.gazetteonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090603/SPORTS/706039901/1008

Can someone tell me what the difference is between him and someone who gave up? You can dress it up all you want. Claim it’s the great talent pool out East, a chance to be financially secure with a raise or discuss facilities. Two of three you likely could have bargained for at ISU with the leverage of being courted by another major program. Continue reading

Jackson’s status as ISU’s new coach

One of the aspects that elevated Dan Gable and Tom Brands to Icon status is the fact they were Iowans. Their college and Olympic accomplishments meant just a little bit more because they grew up within the state’s borders.
No one’s resume is as stacked as Cael Sanderson’s, highlighted by his 159-0 record and four national titles for the Cyclones. With his International success, Sanderson just didn’t share the same status. I believe that’s hurt him with in-state recruiting, even though he was able to nab the likes of Tyler Clark (who I’ve heard could red-shirt as a Hawkeye next year), Andrew Long and Eric Thompson.
So, where does that put Jackson, who is very accomplished? Does he have to win the in-state recruiting battle? Can he win it? Can national reputation bring in the talent to override missing some of Iowa’s best preps?
Only time will tell (How’s that for cliche?) but Jackson is going to be able to do what Sanderson and Bobby Douglas couldn’t do on a regular basis.

Class 1A Sectional hosted by Wapsie Valley H.S.

We’re here and ready to go. Most of today’s action will be covered at the Live-chat at www.iowaprepsports.com. It’s 40 minutes until the action starts and the gym is already packed in. Cameras are set up for a simulcast, but they still might have to turn people away. Wapsie Valley AD Marty McKowen and Principal Greg Eschweiler(sp?) have been very accomodating. Should be a fun afternoon.

The live-cha( was interrupted midway thru first post. Laptop battery died. Have staff looking for a power strip because plug ins are occuppied. Lots of pins to start and no upsets.

East Buch just lost a couple tough ones at 135 and 140. North Linn perfect so far with some pins. Lynx could be set to avenge TRC loss.
Wild match at 140 with Josh Becker (Don Bosco) beating Nurre (Maq Valley) 16-14. Nurre threw Becker to his back twice nearly getting the pin including as time ran out.
Dons rolling with pins from Kettman (171) and Thome (189).

Live- chat is up and running. All further updates will be done at www.iowaprepsports.com
