Ironside still influencing Eastern Iowa wrestlers

Mark Ironside is a beloved wrestling figure in Eastern Iowa. It could be the two prep state titles he won for Cedar Rapids Jefferson, his four-time All-American and two-time national champ career for the University of Iowa or the energetic, passionate and sometimes brutally honest radio analysis for Hawkeye wrestling. Frayer leaving Iowa for Wisconsin post

Jared Frayer is leaving the University of Iowa wrestling program to become an assistant coach for the University of Wisconsin and coach Barry Davis. Frayer was the strength and conditioning coach for the Hawkeyes for the 2008-09 season.

A source close to the program said Frayer met with the team Thursday to tell them of his decision, calling the move amicable and understandable one for Frayer’s career. Frayer is replacing Donny Pritzlaff, who became Davis’ top assistant after former Hawkeye Bart Chelesvig resigned in May. Chelesvig resigned after 16 years, saying “I am confident the program is heading in the right direction” and “My time here has been very memorable but I feel it is time for me to move on to a new chapter in my professional life.”

The source said Frayer originally turned down an offer from Wisconsin, but then accepted the position of second assistant, which could mean a double in his current salary.

A search for Frayer’s replacement should begin. Right now, it’s hard to picture a list of candidates. Steve Mocco will surface, but I’m not sure he’d be the choice. I would love to see Mark Ironside in an official capacity to the program, but that’s highly unlikely. Would Joe Johnston be interested in returning and leaving his position as Director of Wrestling Operations at Missouri? I heard Royce Alger was in Cedar Rapids recently. Would he be considered?
