Gehrke going at full-throttle

CEDAR FALLS – Jessica Gehrke runs like a prized automobile.
She’s has the speed of a Porsche and the elegance of a Rolls-Royce. But the Iowa City West junior lacks something those cars possess – cruise control.
“It’s always go, go, go,” Gehrke said.
It was no different Tuesday when she displayed her wheels on the UNI-Dome track. Gehrke sped to two individual titles and contributed to a championship relay at the A.D. Dickinson girls state indoor track meet. Continue reading

Linn-Mar pins Cedar Falls

MARION – If you left the Linn-Mar gymnasium for a moment last night, you risked missing a block of the action.
The good news for those home fans was Linn-Mar won the pinfest with Cedar Falls to come away with the Mississippi Valley Conference dual victory. The teams combined for 10 pins, but the Lions scored seven of them for a 49-25 victory.
The Lions forced the action in most matches of the final regular-season dual.
“I thought we wrestled aggressive,” Linn-Mar Coach Doug Streicher said. “It was our best team performance to date as far as everyone coming out trying to score.”
Most of all, they were looking to score the fall. Only two of their seven wins went the entire six minutes.
“It’s part of being aggressive and if something comes up you can use you have to go with it,” Streicher said. “It was good to see them finally put themselves in those positions.”
First-year wrestler Michael Green ignited Linn-Mar with the first of five straight falls. Green improved to 17-14 with a pin in 2:53 over Michael Hanson at 215. He scored three takedowns to build a 6-2 lead before ending it. Green leapt with excitement after the win.
“It’s my first-year so I really like getting any pin I can,” said Green, who’s wrestling to improve his football skills. “I’m just really excited for all the ones I can get.”
The excitement was contagious. Mac Mahmens followed with a first-period pin over John Willett to give the Lions a 12-9 lead. It was a lead they didn’t surrender.
“After we got the next couple pins, it was just momentum changing,” Green said. “We just got on a roll.”
Greg Keating (103) decked Ben Swindler in 3:41 for his ninth pin. He was one of two seniors with falls who were honored on Senior Night. Senior Derek Turner pinned Cody Ronan in 1:44 at 130.
“It was a pretty big win,” Keating said. “We haven’t had a lot of success this year as a team, but I think we came together for the last one and I guess that’s pretty important.”
Jeremy Severin and Dan Radig added falls at 112 and 119, giving the Lions a commanding 30-9 lead.
Dailey Johnson (140) won by pin. Mitch Wantock and Mark Atwater won the final two matches – the only consecutive matches to go the distance – for Linn-Mar (12-13, 3-4 MVC).
